Late rally comes up short for Necks against El Campo A late second-half rally fell short as the Columbia Roughnecks fell to El Campo 21-19 last Friday night at Griggs Field on Homecoming night. A 36-yard field goal attempt by Columbia’s Carlos Paniagua with 15 seconds left in the game was short and allowed El Campo to escape with the victory. The missed field goal was a heartbreaker for Columbia (1-3), who rallied from 21-7 second half deficit to get into position to win the game. “The kids played hard, played to the end and put themselves in a position to win,” Columbia coach Leland Surovik said. “We came up against a good football team and we played great against them.” After the Ricebirds took a 21-7 in the third quarter, Columbia started to make its move. On the ensuing kickoff, Dexter Lewis threaded his way through El Campo defender on his way to a 96-yard touchdown return to cut the Ricebird lead to 21-13 with 1:57 left in the third. The extra point kick failed. Special teams came up big again with 10:29 left in the game. Daymond Lewis broke through to block a Ricebird punt, which was picked up by Christian Geribich, who returned it the final 25 yards to get Columbia within two points. A two-point conversion attempt failed. Columbia’s defense then got into the act. With 6:11 left in the game, linebacker John Holmes sacked El Campo quarterback Wesley Condra and knocked the ball loose. Matt Podojil recovered the ball at the Roughneck 46 to set up Columbia’s final drive to win the game. It was one of three fumbles Columbia recovered in the game, which helped keep the game close. The Roughnecks recovered a fumble at their own 8 with 8:23 left in the first quarter to stop a Ricebird drive. With El Campo driving in the second quarter, defensive lineman Noel Castillo recovered another Ricebird fumble at the Columbia 39 with 9:06 left in the half. In the first half, El Campo held a 7-0 before Columbia quarterback Gray Raley threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Johnican, who had gotten behind the El Campo defense with 33 seconds left in the half. Columbia takes this week off before taking on Needville next week in its District 26-3A opener. |
