JOSEPHINE BENN Josephine Helen Benn, age 76, of Brazoria, Texas passed away Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008. She was born June 14, 1932 in Burleson County Texas. She was a founding member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Brazoria. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, R. Lee Benn. Josephine is survived by her two sons, Michael Benn of San Marcos, Texas and Greg Benn and wife, Gaylynn, of Lake Jackson; two grandchildren, Derek Benn of Lake Jackson and Courtney Vernor and husband, Shelby, also of Lake Jackson; one sister, Matilda Kocurek (Ben) of Caldwell; three brothers, Milton Gaas of Bryan, Tony Gaas (Helen) of Buckholts, and Richard Gaas (Erma) of Bryan; sisters-in-law, Bernice Brinkman and Doris and husband, Bennie Supak, of the Birch Community; brother-in-law, Ivo Junek of Bryan; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Pallbearers were Steve Kocurek, Ken Ackinson, Leo Krueger, Franklin Karasek, Jr., Sammy Brinkman, Kevin Supak, and Mark Dziobala. A wake was on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008 at Strickland Funeral Home, 530 Hwy. 36 S in Caldwell. Father Edward Karasek officiated. The funeral service was Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008 in the Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Frenstat. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454 Alexandria, VA 22312 or to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Altar Society in Brazoria. ALICE MAE HENRY Funeral services for Alice Mae Henry, 82 of Sweeny were held Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria with Rev. Lewis Roberson officiating. Burial followed at Rainbow Cemetery in Sweeny. She died Monday, September 22, 2008 at Matagorda Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Bay City. She was a member of Mt. Pilgrim First Baptist Church and enjoyed cooking, watching television and visiting with family and friends. She attended George Washington Carver School. She was preceded in death by her parents; Alfred and Emma Jones, Sr., brothers, Alfred Jones, Jr. and Edmond Jones and sisters, Justine Johnson, Louise Jones and Lillian Gipson. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy Smith (C.C.), Sweeny; sister, Dorothy Wiley (James), Sweeny; very special, reared grandson, Kelvin Alexander (Andrea), Richmond; three grandchildren, Melanie Turcios (Sam), Cypress, Rachel Lee (Ron), Stafford and Alfred Rene Martinez, Houston; host of great grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Active pallbearers will be Ken Alexander, James Williams, Shedrick Helms, Jr, William Earl Smith, David Steamer and John Henry Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be C.C. TROY R. FRIZZELL SR. It is with profound sorrow that we inform you of the passing of our father, Troy R. Frizzell Sr., on Sunday, September 21, 2008. He was predeceased by his father, A.C Frizzell Sr.; his mother, Pauline Frizzell; and his brother, A.C Frizzell Jr. He is survived by his three children, Polly Ann, Carrie and Troy Jr. and wife, Beth, and their children, Samantha and Matthew Frizzell. Dad was born in 1925 in Bokhoma, OK, and grew up in East Texas. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 and survived seven invasions in the Pacific Theater in World War II. Dad graduated from Waskom (TX) High School and attended East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, Texas, Shreveport Trade School in Louisiana, and Industrial Training Institute (HVAC) in Chicago, Illinois. He also helped build Brazosport College and retired as an electrician from BC. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson, Texas, and a lifetime member of VFW, American Legion, Nimitz Foundation and the NRA. He also was a member of the Navy Memorial and WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. Locally, he was a member of the Clute Library as well. He was known to his many friends for his sense of humor and generosity. Memorial services were Saturday, September 27, in the United Methodist Church of Brazoria, at 2 p.m. Please send donations in Dad’s memory to the American Legion, the VFW or to the Admiral Nimitz Foundation in Fredericksburg. CECIL POWELL Cecil C. Powell went to meet his Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 27, 2008 in Houston. He was born November 23, 1928 in East Columbia to Reuben and Velma Powell. Cecil was a member of Columbia United Methodist Church and he also loved to spend his time fishing with friends and family. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 yrs and 10 months, Vivian; a son, Cecil C. Powell Jr. (Buddy) and wife Alice, Houston; brothers, Reuben Powell and wife Yvonne, and Kenneth Powell and wife Sandra, all of West Columbia; sisters, Hattie Mae Sims and husband Glenn, and Goldie Bertram and husband Herman, all of West Columbia; grandchildren, Clayton Powell, Evelyn Carter and husband Calvin; and three great grandchildren, Frank, Mya and Lee. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Baker Funeral Home Chapel in West Columbia. Rev. Dave Barclay officiated. Burial followed at 12:30 p.m. at Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo. Cecil’s family received friends on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. RAYMOND SCOTT Funeral services for Raymond “Swivel” Scott 79, of West Columbia will be Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Greater New Prospect Church, in Needville, with Rev. A.L. Edwards, pastor and Dr. T. L. Richardson, officiating. Burial will follow at Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Needville. Viewing will be Friday from 3-4:30 p.m. at Green’s Mortuary Funeral Home in Bay City, and from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in West Columbia. ELSIE AMELIA (TAPLIN) WHITWORTH Funeral services for Elsie Amelia (Taplin) Whitworth will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, October 2, 2008 at the 1st Presbyterian Church of Brazoria with a graveside service to follow at 4:30 p.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery in Beeville, Texas. Visitation was held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in Brazoria. Pallbearers will be Mark Roth, Kevin Whitworth, Ernie Hyer, Butch Whitworth, Jim Bednorz and Greg Stanford. Elsie was born December 30, 1920 in Aberystwyth, Wales, UK to Ernest and Minnie Taplin, and passed away September 28, 2008 in Houston. She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Hyer and husband Gary, Brazoria; son-in-law, Mark Roth, Chicago, IL; 3 grandchildren, Caitlin and Paige Hyer, Brazoria, Kevin Whitworth, Kankakee, IL; and a beloved niece, Barbara Bednorz, George West, TX; and her loyal companion, Lil’ Bit. She was preceded in death by her husband Douglas, her parents Ernest and Minnie Taplin, her brother Albert Taplin, and her children David Ernest and Debbie (Kate). Elsie was a WWII war bride. She was a “Rosie the Riveter” who helped make airplane wings during the war. She met Doug in England and immigrated to the United States in 1947. She lived in Pleasanton, TX for many years, moving to Brazoria in 1990 to be near her daughter. While in Pleasanton, she was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and a founding member of the Pleasanton EMS. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In Brazoria, she became a loyal member of the 1st Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder. She enjoyed the camaraderie of the Brazosport British “Tea sippers”. She loved to fish and play golf.
