Javier Joshua Castaneda Jr, infant son of Javier Joshua Castaneda Sr. and Gabrielle Aguilar of Angleton, went home with the angels on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. ELSIE MARTHA COLE Funeral services for Elsie Martha Cole, 82 of Sweeny, were Monday, June 29, 2009 at 2 p.m, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Sweeny with Pastor Ed Boineau officiating. Burial followed at Sweeny Cemetery. Visitation was Sunday, June 28, from 4 until 6 p.m. at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia. Elsie was born on October 9, 1926 in Orange Grove, Texas to Fritz George and Minnie De Reese and passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She lived her life as a woman on a mission; in participating as an active member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Sweeny. She served in the LWML organization and was treasurer of the Altar Guild. Elsie also volunteered as the AARP Treasurer and retired from nursing after 35 years of service with Matagorda General Hospital. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Louis Ray Cole; brother Leroy DeReese, and sister Alvira Chenault. Elsie is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Calvin Ray and Cynthia Cole of West Columbia and Richard Louis and Brenda Cole of Sweeny; sisters and brothers-in-law, Myrtle and Lawrence Feldhousen, Mable and Albert Kocurek, and Ella Mae and Clarence Cothron; grandchildren and spouses, Amanda and John Kallus, Joshua Cole, and Amy and Todd Bowman; step-grandchildren and spouses, Renee and Anthony Charanza, Debbie and Steven Phillips, Candy and Daniel Martinez, and Georgia and Jason Boone; great-grandchildren Makenzie Rae Kallus and Carlee Jo Kallus; and numerous step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. JOHNNIE MAE HOWARD Johnnie Mae Howard passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Kindred Hospital in Houston. She was 84 years of age and lived in West Columbia all of her life. She was born in Bay City on June 4, 1925 to John and Bertha Smith of West Columbia. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She attended Family Life Church in Lake Jackson. She loved playing cards and her marble board game with her grandson and her kids. She loved cooking for her family and friends. Funeral services were Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Baker Funeral Home, West Columbia, with Brother Richard Smith officiating. Pallbearers were Ed Wilkes, Charlie Carter III, Russell Stanger, James Thompson, Billy Ray Walden, Sam Thompson II. Honorary pallbearers were John McNeel, Charles Carter II, and all of her old dearest and close friends. Johnnie Mae was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Owen Howard, her parents John and Bertha Smith, and brother Billy Smith. She is survived by one son, Gary Howard and wife Elma of Snook, Texas; two daughters, Linda Gardner and husband Bill of West Columbia, and Judy Carter and husband Willard of Brazoria; sister, Betty Jo Pinckney of Mena, Arkansas; grandson, Justin Carter; step-grandchildren, Breanne and Cody Gardner; and numerous nieces and nephews. Huvar, 68, of Jones Creek, Texas, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at Angleton Danbury Medical Center in Angleton, Texas. He was born September 15, 1940, in El Campo to Henry and Rosalie Huvar. He served in the U.S. Army. Donald came to the area in 1970 and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and presently a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Brazoria. Don retired from Frito-Lay after 29 years of service. He is preceded in death by his parents. Don is survived by his wife, Mary Huvar of Jones Creek; two children, Sheryl Andrews (Darrell) of Spring and Dr. Jared Huvar and wife, Priscilla, of Lake Jackson; four grandchildren, Olivia and Kori Andrews, and Bella and Scarlett Huvar; sisters, Pat and Paul Feagin of El Campo and Catherine Huvar of Katy; brother, Phillip and Diana Huvar of El Campo; and several nieces and nephews. Rosary services were at 2:30 p.m., and the funeral Mass followed at 3 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Brazoria with Father Tin Pham officiating. Interment was at Gulf Prairie Cemetery in Jones Creek. Pallbearers were Greg Swoboda, Todd Swoboda, Chris Huvar, Richie Feagin, Robert Mares and Scotty Sims. DOROTHY MARIAM Dorothy May Mariam, 85, of Brazoria passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, June 27, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in China Springs, Texas on June 5, 1924 to J. K. and Thelma Helton. Dorothy was a long-standing and active member of the First Baptist Church of Brazoria as well as being a part of the Brazoria Order of the Eastern Star. She worked for CBISD for 21 years. Her hobbies included ceramics, porcelain baby dolls, and crocheting. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Funeral services have been scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church - Brazoria with Bro. Greg Smith and Bro. Kenneth James officiating. ANITA RHEA NEWMAN ROACH Anita Rhea Newman Roach, age 74, passed away at her home in Frisco on June 25, 2009, surrounded by her family after a five year battle with cancer. She was born December 1, 1934 in Frisco, Texas, to Opal (Edwards) and Raymond Earl “Boose” Newman. She attended school in Frisco for the first 10 years before moving to Freeport where she completed her high school education at Brazosport High School, but at her insistence, her diploma was signed by W.O. Silk, superintendent in Frisco. Anita spent most of her working years in the field of education, finally retiring from Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Houston. Anita married Sam Roach on Feb. 14, 2002. She had a green thumb and enjoyed working with her plants and flowers in the yard and in her greenhouse. She had a zest for life and enjoyed traveling and just being with friends. She is preceded in death by her father, Raymond Earl “Boose” Newman and her mother Opal Edwards Wolfe. She is survived by her husband, Sam Roach; by two children, Christa Childres and Amanda Foytik and husband Donny; two grandchildren, Brandy Foytik and Cory Foytik; three siblings, Wanda Blumenreich, Earlene Jett and Coy Newman; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends from both Houston and Frisco. The family would like to thank her friends, nurses and doctors, especially Dr. Boyd Jenkins and Clara Jones for their help and concerns during her last valiant days. A memorial service was Tuesday, June 30 at Grace Avenue United Methodist Church, 3521 Main Street, Frisco, with Rev. Billy Echols-Richter officiating. Services were under the direction of Metrocrest Funeral Home, Carrollton, Texas. EDWARD HOWARD McGAUGHEY JR. Edgar Howard McGaughey Jr. died at his home on Thursday June 2. Edgar was born December 17, 1917 in Groveton, Texas to Adele Davis and Edgar Howard McGaughey Sr. At the age of 15 he moved to West Columbia, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1940 he married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Beal, and they settled in West Columbia. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. This past January they celebrated their 69th anniversary. Edgar and Ruthie still have all 4 of their children – Ed McGaughey III, Margie Bertrand, Tommy and Cleveland. They are also blessed with 8 grandchildren – Tiffany Couser, Patrick McGaughey, Melanie and Jennifer McGaughey, Michael Couser, Dixie Wade McGaughey, Cyndi Barnett and Mack Mitchell McGaughey; and 4 great grandchildren – Kennadi Hyland, Mitch McGaughey, John McGaughey and Faith Barnett. Edgar was always active in Bethel Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon, elder and trustee for the church. He was also active in the American Legion (past Commander), Rotary, County School Board , the Junior Chamber of Commerce, a Mason for 55 years and a member of St. John Lodge #5. He also worked with County Welfare and the United Way. In 1936 he went to work at the Humble service station in West Columbia, and later bought the dealership and operated it until entering the Army in 1942. He went to the Pacific Theater, serving in the Leyte Gulf battle area and in gun emplacements in the New Guinea and Philippines campaigns. Afterwards he was sent to Japan with the occupation forces. Edgar came back to his bride and the service station which was in the hub of the business center in West Columbia for more than two decades. He left the service station business in 1963 joining Coastal States Corporation where he served as a District Gauger until he retired in 1983. He was preceded in death by his parents Adele and Edgar Sr. and two brothers, Jack D. and Billy F. McGaughey. Edgar is survived by his wife Ruth Beal McGaughey and his brother Roger Mack McGaughey, who lives in Pasadena, Texas. Survivors also include their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren mentioned above. Pallbearers will be Patrick, Dixie and Mack McGaughey, Michael Couser, Russell Stanger III, Wade Beal and Dean Wilke. Visitation was Friday June 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bethel Presbyterian Church in East Columbia. The services were at Baker Funeral Chapel in West Columbia with Reverends Bruce Williams and Tommy Alford Saturday June 27 at 10 a.m. with graveside services following at Columbia Cemetery.
